Markforged Launches Flame-Retardant Material to Open New Applications in Aerospace, Defense, and Automotive

Leader in industrial 3D printing creates the first flame-retardant plastic reinforceable with continuous carbon fiber

WATERTOWN, Mass., May 02, 2019 (GLOBE NEWSWIRE) -- Markforged, the leading manufacturer of metal and carbon fiber 3D printers, announced the availability of Onyx FR, a new, V-0 rated flame-retardant material designed for industries such as aerospace, automotive, and defense. Traditional 3D printed plastics will burn if they catch fire, but this new material is self-extinguishing, so it will actually stop itself from burning. Onyx FR features unmatched strength, superior print quality, high-quality surface finish – all while resisting fire.

“Manufacturers choose Markforged because our industrial 3D printers deliver strong, lightweight end-use parts at significant cost and time savings,” stated Jon Reilly, VP of Product at Markforged. “Onyx FR opens up more applications for 3D printing across automotive, aerospace, and defense industries because it meets higher fire safety standards. When these parts are reinforced with strands of continuous carbon fiber, they are as strong as aircraft-grade aluminum at half the weight.”

Onyx FR joins Markforged’s wide portfolio of industrial metal and composite materials. Eiger, Markforged’s cloud-based software platform, makes it easy for clients to design a part, choose their materials, and just click print from across the room or around the world.

Onyx FR will be available to all new and existing Markforged customers with its Industrial Series Printers. To learn more about Onyx FR and our Industrial Series Printers, visit the Markforged website and read the datasheet.
